RUFFED GROUSE

The term, "Ruffed," refers to a male's black feathers along his neck and head. They ruffle when he is in display which is when his black feathers stand up along with his tail. The male does this when he is defending his territory or sees a female of interest. When he is in display, he looks twice his normal size to appeal to a female or threaten the nearby predator. The Ruffed Grouse do not like human interference and in response are found to live in areas were they feel secured and safe. Many live in wooded areas, specifically younger wood lots that recently have been clear- cut logged since they have more shelter and food resources in that kind of environment.
