WOOD DUCK

The Wood Duck thrives in ponds and river swamps. They also can be seen in shallower lakes closer to thickets of forests. Like other ducks in Wisconsin, they migrate during the winter months. The Wood Duck feeds on seeds, aquatic plants, and insects. Male Wood Ducks are very distinguishable as they have more of a square head and a skinny neck compared to most ducks. Males have a shiny, green head that can shimmers with purples and blues in different lightings. They also have a chestnut breast with bright red to pink colored eyes and bill. Females are a light tan brown color with a white speckled breast.
